Install Steps for Autodesk Products - Hotfixes and Service Packs
Installation of Autodesk software does not have to be problematic. However, differences in how Windows is installed and configured on your system can cause problems with software installs. In all cases, installation requires Administrative Privileges on the local machine so that installation programs may write to the local machine registry.
In addition, various antivirus software must be turned fully off, making sure that all antivirus services have been stopped on the machine prior to installation of software. Access to services is through Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services. |
Windows XP
This information applies to initial installs, upgrades and installation of service packs and hot fixes.
- Make sure Windows XP is up to date. Primary areas of concern:
- Windows Service pack 2 or higher.
- All Windows Hotfixes ( especially upgrade .NET Framework to v3.5 SP1).
- Clear out all temporary files on your local dive and make sure you have sufficient free space on the drive to hold all the temporary installation files as well as the installed program files.
- Make sure you have an Approved Graphics Card and certified drivers.
- Make sure that you have adequate system resources. Inventor requires a MINIMUM of 2GB RAM to be useable in production. If purchasing a new system, go with a 64 bit platform and operating system with an absolute minimum of 4GB ( 8GB Recommended) RAM memory.
- Login as local administrator to do the Installation. You MUST have full access to the registry for a valid install.
- Disable all antivirus services (Critical!) If there are Antivirus services running (Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services), then stop ALL AV services.
- Read the documentation included with your software, paying special attention to choosing the proper install path for your needs.
- In the software selection phase of your installation, make sure to configure your options at each step requested.
- Apply all relevant service packs for the software you have installed.
- In order to use Autodesk software, you must have at least Power User rights because the software writes to the Windows registry. If your registry is managed from the server, then make sure all pertinent registry keys are open for writing. Also, make sure all users have sufficient Read/Write permissions on referenced folders, locally and on the server.
